Understanding Biopsies
A biopsy is the most important procedure in diagnosing skin cancer. It involves the removal of a small portion of skin tissue for microscopic study. This helps to diagnose the presence of cancerous cells and to identify the nature of a skin lesion. We perform state-of-the-art techniques in our Skin Cancer Center to ensure correct and timely diagnosis.
Types of Biopsies
We provide various types of biopsies depending on the specific needs of each patient:
1. Shave Biopsy
A shave biopsy involves shaving off a thin layer of skin from the outer surface. This procedure is very commonly used for lesions that look superficial. It is relatively painless and leaves minimal or no scarring.
2. Punch Biopsy
A punch biopsy is the process where a cylindrical tool is used to take a deeper core of the skin tissue. This method is good for lesions that are deeply penetrating in the skin. It provides a better sample of tissue, which will aid in an accurate diagnosis.
3. Excisional Biopsy
In excisional biopsy, the entire lesion or tumor is excised. This is an excisional biopsy performed when the lesion is sufficiently small and can be excised totally. It often combines diagnosis and treatment for small tumors.
4. Incisional Biopsy
An incisional biopsy is done when the lesion is too large and it’s not possible to totally remove it. It involves excision of the part of the lesion for diagnosis. This aids in diagnosing large tumors where complete removal may not be feasible at the initial stage.
What to Expect During a Biopsy
Our healthcare providers ensure our Skin biopsy services are as comfortable and painless as possible. You can expect:
- Preparation: The area surrounding the skin lesion will be prepared with a local anesthesia to numb the skin so that there will be less pain when removing the tiny portion of skin.
- Post-Procedure Care: The biopsied site will covered with a dressing and you’ll be taught on how to care for the area so that it heals effectively and without complications.
- Results: The tissue sample will be sent to our laboratory, and the results normally take one week. After one week, your doctor will discuss the results with you in detail.
