Understanding Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy abnormal skin cells, including precancerous and cancerous lesions. It is commonly used to treat various skin conditions, including basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratoses, and warts. At our Skin Cancer Center, cryotherapy is performed by skilled dermatologists using precise techniques to target and eliminate abnormal tissue.
How Cryotherapy Works
During the procedure:
- Application: Liquid nitrogen or another cryogen is applied directly to the affected area using a spray device or cotton swab. The extreme cold temperature freezes and destroys the abnormal cells.
- Thawing: After freezing, the treated area is allowed to thaw, which helps enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
- Repetition: Depending on the size and depth of the lesion, cryotherapy may be repeated in multiple sessions to ensure complete removal.
Advantages of Cryotherapy
- Non-invasive: Cryotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that does not require incisions or anesthesia in most cases.
- Minimal Discomfort: Patients may experience mild discomfort or a burning sensation during and immediately after treatment, which typically subsides quickly.
- Quick Recovery: Healing is usually quick, with minimal scarring compared to surgical methods.
- Versatility: Cryotherapy can be used to treat multiple lesions in one session and is suitable for various skin types and locations.
Post-Procedure Care
After cryotherapy:
- Wound Care: You will receive instructions on how to care for the treated area, including keeping it clean and applying healing ointment as directed.
- Follow-up: Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor healing and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Additional sessions may be recommended if needed.
