Understanding Excisions
Excision is a surgical procedure used to remove a skin lesion or tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue. This method is often employed when the lesion is suspected to be cancerous or needs complete removal for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. At our Skin Cancer Center, excisional surgery is performed with precision and care to ensure optimal outcomes.
Types of Excisions
1. Standard Excision
A standard excision involves removing the entire visible lesion along with a margin of healthy tissue. This method is used for smaller lesions that are confined to the surface layers of the skin.
2. Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Mohs surgery is a specialized technique used for removing skin cancer, particularly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It involves removing thin layers of tissue and examining them under a microscope immediately after removal. This process is repeated until no cancerous cells are detected, minimizing the removal of healthy tissue and maximizing the preservation of cosmetic and functional outcomes.
3. Wide Local Excision
In cases where the cancerous lesion has spread deeper into the skin or is larger in size, a wide local excision may be recommended. This procedure involves removing the tumor along with a wider margin of surrounding healthy tissue to ensure complete removal.
What to Expect During an Excision
- Consultation: Your dermatologist will evaluate the lesion and discuss the recommended treatment plan, including the type of excisional surgery.
- Procedure: Excisional surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon will carefully remove the lesion, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding healthy tissue.
- Closure: Depending on the size of the excision, the wound may be closed with stitches. Techniques such as skin grafts or flaps may be used for larger excisions to optimize healing and cosmetic results.
- Recovery: You will receive post-operative care instructions, including wound care and monitoring for signs of infection. Recovery time varies depending on the size and location of the excision.
